Refined sugar

We all know that refined sugar is bad for us and that it may be making us fat and unhealthy, so why do we crave it so much and want to keep having it?

It is actually proven that most processed foods are made in such a way as to cause us to be addicted to them.  In fact, studies show that sugar is even more addictive than cocaine!!  Crazy!!!  I love how Melissa Hartwig with the Whole 30 program describes it, she calls it the Sugar Dragon.  When you think about it, that’s exactly what it feels like sometimes, this craving rising up inside you, so strong, that you really find it extremely hard to resist!  And yes, it kind of feels like a Dragon!

So, what CAN you do if you feel like the Sugar Dragon has taken over?  Two words:  Starve it!   Slay that Sugar Dragon by starving it!!!  I guarantee you that if you make yourself go without sugar for even as little as a week it will get easier and easier to resist.  The first week is always the hardest, but you can do it!
I remember very specifically telling someone that I would never be able to go without refined carbs(which by the way turn into sugar in our bodies),  I loved my pasta and rice and sweets.  I knew I couldn’t do…Until I made up my mind and DID IT!  If I can, for sure you can!

This doesn’t just apply to sugar, it applies to lots of areas of our lives.   I’ve said many many times, that what you feed grows.  Think about it, if you have good positive thoughts and you choose to ignore the bad and focus on the good in a person or situation, then you will have more good thoughts.  This works the opposite too.  Say you have a negative thought about someone, then you keep feeding that thought, and pretty soon you are thinking of more and more things about that person that you don’t like.  When you choose to “feed” the positive it will grow, when you choose to “feed” the negative it will grow.  Whatever we feed grows.  I want to encourage you to feed what you want to grow.

If you want good healthy choices in your life, feed the good.  And Slay the Sugar Dragon by starving it! And if you feel like you really want a sweet, then have a piece of fruit, or one of the much healthier options below.

Divine Chocolate Mousse

  • 1 can full fat coconut milk, only use the hardened cream part
  • 1/4 cup raw honey
  • 1/3 cup dark cacao
  • 1 tbsp vanilla

Toss everything into a blender until well combined.  If you want to get fancy, top with a dollop of coconut whip cream!

Almond Butter Energy Bites

  • 1 cup wheat free rolled oats
  • 2/3 cup unsweetend coconut flakes
  • ½ cup almond butter
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 1Tbsp. chia seeds
  • 1tsp. vanilla extract

Mix all the ingredients together and roll into 1 inch balls.  Store in air tight container in fridge.

Nut Butter Banana

  • 1 banana
  • 2 tsp. almond butter
  • 2 tsp. unsweetened shredded coconut

Slice banana in half, spread almond butter on top and sprinkle with coconut. Freeze 1-3 hrs.  Enjoy this sweet treat any time!
